Native to Western Asia, clary sage is now cultivated mainly in France, Russia, and the United States. Clary sage is harvested during its flowering period in August.
Known in Europe since the year 800, clary sage is robust and very aromatic.
Priests, alchemists, and healers in Europe believed that this plant helped to distinguish between good and evil and to develop maturity and wisdom. Considered a treasure of the gods, it was used to ward off evil spirits.
